Looking into Transculturality through the metaphor of dance. Reality and the Cosmos, presented by the Dance Theatre Heidelberg, illustrates an instance of culture, constructed through dynamic processes as opposed to fixed ones.

Welcome to Interval,

the online magazine of Co/LAB – The Transcultural Collective. We strive to be the interval that bridges the gap between transcultural theory and practice, to make research accessible, engaging, and fun for a wider audience. For you and together with you, we aim to integrate the transcultural model into discussions about art, politics, economy, and society beyond the confines of academia.

Time to address the elephant in the room:
What is transculturality?

The canonical forms of studying ‘culture’ have its roots in the colonial enterprise, where the forces of the empire engaged with the concept of cultures as geographically, ethnically, and linguistically contained systems. This perspective is reflected in the academic and artistic works produced from the early 1800s to the mid-1900s. This notion of culture is firmly entrenched in the imperialist mindset, which primarily views cultures through their differences, a strategy employed to politically isolate and dominate large populations under the guise of "civilising" them.

Transcultural studies seek to challenge this narrative.

We ask, "Are cultures truly so isolated and developed in separation from one another?"

In a place like Pakistan, dance is automatically politicized...

That’s what Amna Mawaz Khan, a Pakistani dance performer, activist, and transcultural scholar, experiences all the time. Join us in Mind The Gap for an exclusive interview that speaks about the transformative impact of dance as a tool for political expression, transcending boundaries and sparking conversations on vital issues like gender dynamics and transgenerational trauma.
